A New Family
written on Sunday, January 26, 2014 @ 2:11 AM ✈
Hey guys! It's been a while~
And I'm back with exciting news, which is that I have started my journey in ngee ann poly :)
I remember going through the nerve-wrecking interviews last year, thinking I would never got in.
I was in the library when the results came out, and I ran out just so I could scream!
I was utterly, delightfully surprised.
For me, dpa wasn't about securing a place because my results wouldn't be able to meet the cut off point. It was to confirm the passion and talent I had for the course.
Day 1: 22 Jan 2014
Anyways, so I had been waiting for this camp for like forever!
Although I had met a few dpa kids during open house, this time it wasn't just 20 of them. It was 170 of them. I was nervous and jittery of course, and everything felt awkward at first.
But believe me, it gets over quickly.
So all those going into jc/poly soon, just hang through the first hour of meeting new people and it'll be fine! ^^

| Audrey and I before we split into our respective groups. |
|
Okay so I was in group 4, and I didn't know anyone there!
In poly, the most important thing is to adapt and make friends fast, so it was really a huge test for me, to come out of my comfort zone and to take responsibility for making friends.
It's important that you take the first step, not wait for others to come to you.

On day 1, we played really frustrating games that was tiring and painful ):
the first game was to balance a rope on our shoulders and walk in a line with it!
Everytime the rope dropped, it meant 5 more buddha claps.
We went up to 40 buddha claps, so like 5+10+15....+40=180 claps?!
the second game was key punch, where some of the numbers were in malay and tamil.
it was difficult really.
until we realized we were fooled into thinking that there were 30 cards when there was only 25!
no wonder I couldn't find the number i was assigned to ):
each try for the key punch meant 20 squats. so we did like over 100?
now you know why its tiring and painful ><
did i mention we climbed 8 stories too?!

So then we were split from our groups and assigned to different sleeping apartments at The Loft@94.
It meant having to make friends. Again.
When I first went into the apartment, I was so surprised to see a bunch of guys, I thought that I was on the wrong floor! Apparently it was just people hanging out.
I was the first to bathe, and hell were the toilets creepy! (so i played music inside, don't judge!! I heard horror stories about the place... luckily nothing happened to me! )
Of course, I was physically exhausted already, so I decided to crash. (I couldn't sleep till 1 but its a story I can't tell.)
Day 2: 23 Jan 2014
A tip: don't on the aircon in the loft. It was freezing and I woke up many times!
So I woke at 6:30 which is seriously too early for my soul ):
my eyes were too tired and small to even wear contacts!
First highlight of the day, we had amazing race! :)
 |
| First stop: MySpace! |
|
At myspace, we played broken telephone!
And our word was... Wrecking Ball.
I was the second person in the relay, and when munyi started to stick out her tongue and lick, I thought it was miley cyrus at first! She even did the action of sitting on the ball but I thought it was pole dancing ahahahha.
It was such an entertaining game, really! I laughed soooooo much!
It was then I realized how much fun my group was :)
of course, we didn't get the right answer in the end, and was much slower than the other team, but it really didn't matter.
we weren't overly competitive about it, we only enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
 |
| I seriously didn't get this at first, but its Radio Heatwave. |
At the atrium where radio heatwave was, we played suck the ball. (yes sounds wrong.)
It was to suck up a ping pong ball using a bubble tea straw!
The guys went first, and they were seriously damn fast and good at it!
When it came to me, I dropped it so many times!
But it was cause I didn't know the technique to it, well, nobody told the guys either but they knew, which says something about them right! :P
we lost that game too, but its okay, it was seriously fun teasing the guys about it.
 |
| This is pretty obvious, Poolside Cafe! |
At the poolside cafe, we played charades!
The actions are a bit hard to put into words, so I shall skip this part!
It was hilarious, that's all I have to say.
 |
| No guessing needed, right? Studio 27. |
Here, we played noisy Q&A.
It was to put in earphones blasting music so you couldn't hear yourself or the person opposite you.
One person had to ask a question, and the other had to answer it with the list of answers given!
This part was really epic, because we had answers like these:
Q: "Who is the principal of NP?" A: "LEE HSIEN LOONG!"
The next game was the World Wide Web.
It was to get everyone in the team to get across a web without touching the strings.
It meant that we had to carry people in.
Another physically tiring game... great. That's what I thought at first.
The first hour was just frustrating and tiring.
No talking, no discussing, and we got "foul" so many times and redid it so many times!
Stepping on each other, carrying people in, falling and touching the string.
I did my fair share of jumping over the strings, so i was tired too!
Who knew that the key to success was to work with the team opposite us?
So what happened was that the other team met us halfway.
Half of their team and half of ours formed a line and then people were carried above like a conveyer belt!
Haha it was the first time I got carried like that! It was a really unique experience.
My shirt (even though I made sure I tucked it in) ran up and well. The hands were all touching my bare skin but of course, it was all for the game!
I learnt to trust the people below me to carry me, even though they were really tired from having to carry so many people, and I hoped they didn't notice my shirt too much :P
Finally, after 3 hours, we could say that, we did it!
 |
| Partying (literally) after our success! ^^ |
|
After, we had a BBQ! Woohoo~
I choose to stay and prepare for the bbq, but of course there wasn't much to do since the guys took care of it!
They were so good at it that the makeshift bbq pit was melting!
 |
| The girls slacking and camwhoring. |
|
Although I didn't eat much during the bbq, the important thing is that I had fun helping out and just plain partying to the songs :)
They even played red camp songs which got a few of us dancing to it, which was so cute ^^
Of course, when you're having fun, time flies.
We had a really late and long debrief, which started at 12am and ended around 3am?
Of course, we also played games too, that's why it took so long!
But I didn't mind not sleeping, i was kept awake with my really funny group members ^^
Really, it was like a new found family.
Even though some of them were quiet and I didn't get much time and chances to talk to them, they still contributed faithfully to the group and bonded as one family.
I even got the chance to do some girl talk with joey and aubrey after, and I'm so grateful I met friends like them <3
 |
| Zeke (our SL) slept like that that night!! |
Day 3: 24 Jan 2013
I slept at 4 plus am the previous night, and woke up at 7am. Running on 2 hours of sleep obviously had its effects on me. I was a little high on the lack of sleep.
The activities for today were mainly sports and wellness talk, then we got separated to our different schools already ):
So that wraps the end of the dpa camp.
I'm really thankful for the friends I got to made during this camp, and seniors I've gotten to know.
Although it wasn't the start I was expecting, it's good enough.
Tomorrow is the start of lessons for me, and this time, I feel prepared.
